Biography
A couple of years ago, I decided I could retire early and afford it by moving abroad. As an ex-educator, I began offering my services to local schools but still had a little time on my hands.
I'd seen GarageBand over the years on my various macs but had no idea what music editing was. After a little messing around, I found a tutorial and presto! - my first ditty. I was hooked - and to think it had only been a click away!
I've had enough musical training to know that I didn't take it seriously enough and will never be more than an amateur - which is utterly cool! - but also enough to know what a great deal iCompositions is for someone like me. So, time to say a few words of appreciation -
ahem:
I love the carefully conceived inclusiveness that defines this site and makes it possible for people like me to play musician. Somehow it works - professionals benefit along with novices and an amazingly supportive, open community has evolved. It seems crazy sometimes, or at least presumptuous, to be uploading my primitive stuff next to the incredible talent on this website, but that's the point! The passion, respect and generosity shared by iCompers motivates and teaches everybody. Learning becomes as important as the music; collaboration and experimentation, as rewarding as the finished product. I trust that the 'high-end' musicians are getting showcased as they deserve and leave that to the moderators. (Sort of how democracy is supposed to work: you hardly notice good government.)
My setup:
M-Audio 49i keyboard
Audio technica AT2020 mic
Tascam US-122 interface
Computer 1: G5 imac, with OS 10.4.9, Garage Band
Computer 2: Dell Inspiron, Cubase (haven't learned this one)
After a year and a half, I'm getting a little tired of GarageBand. It is sometimes annoying and seems to have limited editing options, but it's probably just me that's limited. I got Cubase with my M-Audio keyboard but haven't learned it. Anybody have experience with both Cubase AND GarageBand to compare?
Also, recommendations for equipment would be nice to hear. I would give a lot for a mic stand and pop shield, but good equipment is imported and so four times as expensive in a third-world country. I tried Soundhound's suggestion of a stocking with a wire hanger frame as a wind shield, but the recordings sounded muted.
Next trip westward maybe ...
Good grief, did you read this far? Why?!

I have just started recording/arranging and need to upgrade. I live abroad and most electronics are hard to get and costly. I'd still welcome any and all input regarding keyboards, mics, recorders.
